Review of Steve's Guitar Playing by Henk te Veldhuis at Bridge Guitar

Southern Oregon, USA, is the place where Steve Massey is heading from. An alluring finger-style guitarist  who plays in the style of Will Ackerman, Alex de Grassi, Bob Evans and Leo Kottke, but yet Steven has a definitive own signature. He released two albums short after each other Wood and North- west. On Wood you here the soulful and reflective pieces as Morning, Fog Bank, Knock on Wood and Hill Song and Days End with a moody melancholic approach. Highway 62 and Fire are typical road songs which have a cheerful character. One and Always You are embracing passionate ballads. When you listen to the in 2004 released Northwest album the atmosphere is not identical as on Woods, but more challenging pieces are played as Siskiyou Reflections and the uplifting Lewis & Clark Pilgrimage with rich chord changes. Crooked River Railroad is really moving your feet in rhythmical virtuosity as Blue Mountain Stomp with rich percussion and a splendid groove. Eagle Creek Flight has rich overtones and therefore a challenging piece. Neah-Kah-Nie the last track of Northwest has a top-notch bass line and a perfect melody line. Steve Massey, is a player in open tunings and his music can be described as passionate, skillful, soothing and sometimes very groovy. Henk te Veldhuis

Medford, Oregon's Steve Massey is a superb acoustic guitar picker with a crisp style, rich tone, and brilliant dexterity. His folk-influenced songs resonate and shine with the influences of places he knows and loves, from the inspiring, scenic "Highway 62" to the mighty, wind-whipped Columbia River.

Massey's notes are very crisp and well-separated. Each piece is like Mother Nature - magical in every way, a combination of originality and soulfulness; yet raw and uncategorizable. It reminds me of natures sounds and magic. Full of pleasure, peace, and harmony, this music does not seem to be made with earthly 'purposes' like delivering messages. Instead, it is music - it is an artist's expression. And heck of a good job of expression, at that! The compositions and played from the heart with perfection.
